The Honourable Dame Roma Mitchell AC DBE CVO

Governor of South Australia 6th February, 1991-22nd July, 1996.

Educated St. Aloysius' College Adelaide and University of Adelaide.

Admitted to the Bar in South Australia December, 1934.

Appointed QC in 1962.

Appointed Member of Supreme Court of South Australia September, 1965. Sat as judge of first instance and as member of Court of Appeal of that Court until October, 1983. On several occasions served period as Acting Chief Justice.

Awarded CBE in 1971 for services to law.

In 1988-1990 sat with The Right Honourable Sir Harry Gibbs and The Honourable Sir Sydney Frost as a member of the Court of Appeal of Kiribati.

Chairman, Criminal Law and Penal Methods Reform Committee of South Australia from 1971-1977.

Chairman, Parole Board of South Australia from 1974 to October 1981.

Chairman, State Heritage Committee of South Australia from July, 1978 to September, 1981.

Member of Council for Order of Australia 1981-1990.

Member of Steering Committee for Supreme Court Judges' Summer Conference to 1983.

Chairman, Human Rights Commission which came into operation on 10th December, 1981, when Human Rights Commission Act proclaimed, to 9th December, 1986.

Awarded DBE in June,1982 for services to the community.

Awarded Doctor of the University of Adelaide (D. Univ. (Adelaide)) in April, 1985.

Awarded AC in Australia Day Honours, 1991.

Awarded Doctor of Laws honoris causa from The University of Queensland, May 1992.

Awarded Doctor of Laws honoris causa from The Flinders University of South Australia, May 1993.

Awarded Doctor of the University of South Australia (D. Univ. (South Australia)) in May, 1994.

Awarded the Institution of Engineers Medal in September, 1994.

Appointed Member and Presiding Officer to the Advisory Board on Ageing 2 August 1996.
