Government House is situated on the north eastern corner of North Terrace and King William Road in the city of Adelaide.

Over 25,000 people come to Government House each year, whether as guests specifically invited by the Governor to receptions, the investiture of awards, luncheons and dinners, as house guests, as callers on official business, as guests of organisations which host functions in the grounds of Government House or as visitors on Open Days.

As Government House is the private residence of the Governor, it is not open to the public except by personal invitation of the Governor, nor is it available for hire for functions of any kind. However, as indicated on this page, there are many occasions on which members of the general public do come to Government House without the personal invitation of the Governor.

Open Days

Garden Tours are currently not available.

School Tours

Schools may be able to bring in small groups by appointment, if the students are undertaking studies of government, citizenship and Australian history.

A visit to Government House will be of particular interest to upper primary and middle secondary teachers of Society and the Environment as well as SACE teachers of Australian Studies, Politics, Social Studies, Australian History, The Australian Legal System and Legal Studies.

Volunteer guides are available to escort groups of up to 30 students on week days. Your guide will not be an experienced teacher with an in-depth knowledge of the curriculum areas, therefore it is expected that teachers will have identified the relevance of the tour of Government House to the learning areas of the curriculum and will have prepared students in advance.

For further information please contact the Aide to the Governor on 08-8203-9800.

Functions in the grounds

The grounds of Government House may be made available, at the Governor's discretion, for charitable and community events (but not for commercial purposes).

The organisation and cost of such events is the responsibility of the body concerned in close liaison with Government House staff.

It is expected that the Governor will be invited to participate in such events. See the next section "Use of the Grounds" for specific guidelines.
