Rod and I are delighted to host you, the members of the Shadow Cabinet, and your partners, at Government House this evening.

During my initial weeks in office it’s been a pleasure to spend time with many of you at the recent investitures of Queen’s Birthday Honours, at receptions or community events.

These recent weeks have been a period of deep learning for me, not only about the constitutional duties of my position, but about how they sit within the broader role of Governor.

Something that has become apparent to me over this time is your dedication and commitment to the South Australian community.

Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition is a key element of our democracy.

A strong Opposition is crucial to healthy debate, to a healthy political system and a healthy society.

Much of the work done by Shadow Cabinet is not visible to the public, and I recognise the many hours of work which go into these activities.

As you would be aware, in recent years, our democratic institutions have been coming under pressure at the local, national and international level.

Australian institutions and practices have long been hailed for their robustness, adaptability, functionality, and resilience.

I commend the importance you place on ensuring that South Australian institutions retain, and strengthen, these qualities.

It is also important this evening to honour the partners and families of Shadow Cabinet members.

I know from experience it is impossible to do demanding roles like these without support, and I thank families for their generosity and understanding.

Members, I look forward to getting to know you all better over the course of my term.

My wish is that you work together to continue to improve our State and advance the welfare of all South Australians through your work in Opposition.

I trust you will enjoy the outstanding menu prepared by our Government House chefs this evening, as well as our time together.

Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC
