UNESCO South Australia Charter Reception

Rod and I as joint patrons of the UNESCO Adelaide Chapter warmly welcome you to Government House Adelaide.

We are delighted to recognise the work of the Adelaide Chapter and shortly to present four awards to:

  • Mrs Marie Shaw
  • Zaachariaha Fielding
  • Mr Erfanullah Abidi
  • Professor Chris Daniels

Each recipient has contributed in different ways: Together, they have lifted up at risk teenagers and disengaged youth through sport, shared an exceptional talent in the musical and visual culture of the APY Lands, helped to rebuild the lives of refugees, and been a champion of conserving wildlife and nature.

Each exemplifies the aims and ideals of UNESCO – promoting peace and security through education, arts, science, culture, and communication.

As diplomats, Rod and I have seen the benefits that international understanding, cooperation and sharing of expertise bring at the global, national, and local levels.

As Patrons, Rod and I stand ready to support and encourage the UNESCO Adelaide Chapter in its pursuit of rejecting division, promoting opportunity, encouraging freedom of expression, and protecting our environment.

As we travel across the State, we are heartened to meet many people who actively live these goals and priorities.

The actions of individuals can profoundly influence who we as a community by ensuring that what we value is able to thrive and transform lives.

This is no more so than in the work of the UNESCO Adelaide Chapter.

Rod and I thank Helen Rice and her committee for their deep sense of community and unflagging dedication to the UNESCO ideals through a myriad of local and international projects.

We also thank the generous supporters, volunteers, and partners.

Because of your contributions:

  • Deaf children in Cambodia can learn sign language.
  • Handmade therapy dolls enable the children of AIDS ravaged families in Kwazulu Natal to play.
  • A school in Bunjosi Kenya enables children to learn.

Congratulations to the award winners.

Thank you to the Adelaide Chapter for your determination to bring strength and compassion to our world and for showing us all how it is done.
