Accessibility at Government House

Government House Adelaide has completed important accessibility upgrades to its State Entrance, introducing step-free access and other inclusive design features to ensure South Australia’s oldest public building is welcoming to all.

Government House Adelaide has completed upgrades to the State Entrance, including a step-free walkway, handrails, tactile indicators, and improved lighting.

The works provide independent access for people using wheelchairs or mobility aids while maintaining the building’s heritage design.

The upgrades were officially opened on July 28, 2025, by Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC and Mr Rod Bunten, with disability advocate Shane Hryhorec and South Australian Sharks Wheelchair Rugby athlete James Coleman.

Constructed in 1855, the State Entrance had previously been accessible only by stairs.

Visitors who could not use stairs were required to enter through the Eastern Entrance, limiting access to the main doorway used for official occasions.

The upgrades ensure the principal entrance can now be used by all visitors, including those with mobility needs, reflecting a commitment to access and inclusion at Government House.
