Launch of a commemorative bench to honour Moose Dunlop and Dogs Kearney, Trojan’s Trek founders
I am pleased to be here at the Veterans Wellbeing Centre for the launch of the Trojan’s Trek Commemorative Bench, a lasting tribute to two men whose dedication to the veterans’ community we honour today.
As patron of Trojan’s Trek, I have been heartened by the work of this organisation, a community built upon shared experience, trust, and the powerful bonds of mateship.
This bench - placed here at the Repat, a site so deeply connected to the care and recovery of veterans - is much more than furniture.
It is a symbol of Moose’s and Dog’s commitment and untiring service to the veterans’ community.
Some of the most profound social change occurs when communities identify a need and act collectively to address it, and Trojan’s Trek is a defining example of exactly that.
The commitment of Moose and Dogs has been grounded not in theory, but in lived experience, authenticity, and an unwavering pursuit of better outcomes for those who have served.
What they created was not merely a program, but a community where veterans, emergency service personnel and their families feel understood, valued, and supported beyond the uniform.
Trojan’s Trek understands that service does not end when a uniform is removed, and the effects of that service can continue throughout a person’s life.
As Governor I have learned from veterans that the transition from military service to civilian life can be among life’s most challenging passages.
It brings with it a loss of identity, structure, belonging, and the daily connection with trusted peers that service provides.
It is precisely here that Trojan’s Trek steps in, through connection, purpose, and the restorative power of walking together in the wilderness.
I note, with pleasure, Trojan’s Trek’s recent recognition at the 2026 Defence and National Security Awards, hosted by Defence Connect.
Congratulations on winning Best Wellness and Health Program and Best Reservist and Volunteer Support Program, as well as being named a finalist for Best Veteran Support Program.
These awards were not achieved by any one person alone.
I thank the board, trek leaders, volunteers, donors, partner organisations, government representatives, and all who have supported Trojan’s Trek over the years. Your dedication is inspiring.
I am also deeply encouraged by the partnership between veterans, health services, government, and community organisations that underpins Trojan’s Trek’s model.
I believe that strengthening these pathways of collaboration will only deepen the impact of this vital work in the years ahead.
Friends,
The story of Moose and Dogs is, at its heart, a story about what happens when lived experience meets genuine courage — the courage to say: we can do better for the people who served us.
South Australia is richer for your contribution to our veterans and our broader community. I thank you sincerely for your service.
