Law Enforcement Torch Run

Welcome everyone to Government House!

The Governor offers her sincere apologies for not being here today. Although she has tested negative, she is currently following SA Health directions by isolating for a week after coming into contact with a positive COVID case.

She looks forward to meeting you all at a future time.

I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s fantastic to see the Flame of Hope, here in the Government House grounds.

I thank the Law Enforcement Torch Run for keeping the flame safe, while it waits to make its journey from Adelaide to Launceston for the Special Olympics National Games next October.

It is my great pleasure to host this event in celebration of International Day of People with Disability.

This day reminds us that everyone should have the opportunity to set goals and achieve them.

As an inclusive society, we have a responsibility to support all of our citizens – no matter their walk of life, background or abilities – to reach their goals.

Athletes, I thank you for taking part in the Guard of Honour. It was such a lovely way to welcome the runners into the gardens.

I know many of you will represent South Australia at the Special Olympics National Games in 2022.

I applaud all of the hard work, courage and persistence you put into your training, and I know you will represent our state with great pride and distinction next year.

I am also very pleased to have a South Australian 2021 Paralympian with us here today - Isabelle Vincent, the youngest member of the swimming squad.

It was inspiring to watch Australia’s athletes achieve our most successful Paralympics ever, bringing home 80 medals.

As we are all aware, no athlete achieves success on their own.

It takes great coaches, the support of family and friends, and often financial assistance to make dreams come true.

I thank everyone involved in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for its fundraising support of Special Olympians, and for bringing awareness to the achievements and abilities of all people with disability.

To all police officers, paramedics, firefighters and surf life savers here today – your work helps to create a safer and more inclusive community for us all.

I wish everyone a great day.

Mr Rod Bunten
