Multicultural Festival

As we stand here today and look out at Tarntanyangga, Victoria Square, we are reminded that Australia is blessed with a dynamic multicultural population.

We are peoples of many faces, many backgrounds, and many experiences.

But as Australians, we are united by a singular bond: one where people generously share their culture with others and bring their perspectives to our identity, our community and our development as a State and nation.

That gives us strength. It brings us harmony. It brings us skills that advance our economy. It advances our standing in the world.

My travels overseas as Governor, and in previous roles, have made clear to me that our nation’s reputation is internationally enhanced by multiculturalism: we are respected for our social cohesion, appreciated for our embrace of many cultures, and admired for how we harness the skills that people have brought to our shores.

I am delighted that this year is the biggest festival yet, now bringing together 85 groups celebrating 65 cultures whether through performances or stalls.

And for the first time it has a larger footprint extending to the southern part of Victoria Square.

Such multi-faceted showcases are important in demonstrating that here in South Australia we embrace multiculturalism, we recognise its benefits, and we reject division.

Creating an inclusive society where everyone feels they belong is, of necessity, a work in progress.

It is ever evolving and the gains we have made should not be taken for granted.

We need to continue to advocate for them, to strengthen them, and to acknowledge and celebrate them.

Festivals such as this highlight the dynamic inclusion of, and interaction between, all our cultures.

Through interculturalism; we further deepen our understanding of each other and our common ties.

Not only can we enjoy displays, dance, and performances, we can share perspectives on issues that have no boundaries and where we can learn from each other’s cultural perspectives.

I thank the Department of Premier and Cabinet Multicultural Affairs staff for your hard work and dedication in organising this event.

Thank you also to all those who believe strongly in being here and sharing your cultures – the performers, the exhibitors and those who are running myriad activities.

And overall, I wish everyone an enjoyable festival in the sunshine after yesterday’s much needed rain.
