Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron Opening Day
As patron I am pleased to join you for the opening of the 2025-2026 season.
It’s a pleasure to be here on this lovely Spring day[1] and I trust you enjoyed today’s sail past, in what must sure count as ideal conditions.
As I said last year, the opening of each season brings a promise of great sailing, but importantly great companionship and fellowship.
The friendships made, the experiences shared and the commitment to the squadron founded through a shared love of sailing, brings you together and binds you together.
I note with admiration how the squadron has evolved over many decades, while staying true to its founding principles of seamanship and fellowship.
The club's commitment to community sailing, competitive racing, and inclusivity reflects a modern vision that honours tradition while embracing the future.
I am heartened by the Squadron's dedication to programs such as the revitalised Junior Development Program, which now offers comprehensive pathways for young sailors aged 12 to 17.
This initiative demonstrates the club's determination to broaden participation and ensure sailing is accessible as possible.
I congratulate the Squadron on its recent achievements, particularly the remarkable success of Squadron boats at Hamilton Island Race Week and Airlie Beach Regatta.
The third annual Winter Solstice Inland Cruise, which attracted more than 50 members to the Barossa Valley, exemplifies the fellowship that defines this club.
And I look forward to following XX Factor, Cool C4TS and Inukshuk as they compete in this year’s Sydney to Hobart.
Of course, I recognise that since we last met a year ago, the Squadron has experienced sadness, too, with the death of Nick Smith during last year’s Sydney to Hobart, a reminder that the beauty and magnificence of your sport unfold against the very real dangers of the sea.
Friends,
I thank the board, the management committee, and the many members who give generously of their time and expertise to keep the Squadron thriving.
I wish the club every success for the season ahead and for the plans that lie before you.
It gives me great pleasure to declare the 2025-2026 season open.
