State Opera post Cinderella, La Cenerentola post show celebration

Rod and I, as joint patrons of the State Opera, are delighted to join you this evening for the opening night of Cinderella (La Cenerentola).

What a perfect choice of opera to launch the 2026 Golden Jubilee program.

I am sure you, as Rod and I are, have just been thrilled, and captivated, by this deeply human story.

It transcends the fairy tale which is part of the magic of childhood.

It speaks of kindness, forgiveness and hope. With the current geopolitical tensions and stresses on social cohesion, the message is ever more poignant.

Of course, that is the magic of opera. The artistry, music, staging and costumes all coming together to capture our imaginations, make us think deeply about ourselves and how we relate to one another.

And that was clearly evident tonight in that superb performance which I am sure will continue to resonate with us all.

Over the past 50 years, State Opera, has enhanced our national and internation reputation in the arts, through the universal language of music and world-class performances.

Tonight, we have stepped into the Golden Jubilee season, keenly anticipated by us all.

I thank the board members, artistic directors, artists, staff, and supporters who bring the productions to life.

I know it’s a major commitment as opera is one of the most demanding and elaborate of art forms which speaks to our humanity and aspirations.

I congratulate State Opera on its commitment to widening the audiences by presenting opera to school groups and regions and fostering the careers of young and emerging artists, enhancing our cultural life.

As I remarked at the recent Jubilee Dinner, may the State Opera continue to do so for another 50 years by elevating voices, deepening ties between communities and sharing the joy of this stupendous artform.
