StudyAdelaide Spelling Bee
I am pleased to be here in Phnom Penh during my first visit to Cambodia as Governor of South Australia.
In my career I’ve had the privilege of engaging with diplomats and representatives from many foreign governments.
So often education is the cornerstone of bilateral and multilateral conversations, creating a powerful bond between countries.
Many of these conversations take place in multilingual settings.
Cambodian students who speak more than one language are well positioned to strengthen relationships between Cambodia and many English-speaking countries, including Australia.
As a career diplomat, including several years in China as Australia’s Ambassador, I have seen first-hand the value of language in building strong international connections.
South Australia is deeply committed to strengthening our partnership with Cambodia and supporting Cambodian students, whether you engage with South Australian programs like SACE here in Cambodia or study in Adelaide in our schools, vocational education and training institutions, and universities.
Adelaide is a vibrant, multicultural city with a high quality of life and a welcoming community. It is home to international students from over 130 countries, and the presence of diverse cultures enriches our city.
We embrace the culture and perspectives that Cambodian students bring to our classrooms and communities. I encourage every Cambodian student considering international study to choose Adelaide.
In addition to a world-class education system, our city offers a friendly atmosphere that allows students to focus on their studies and personal growth, while enjoying a unique blend of natural beauty and a vibrant lifestyle.
Parents will be glad to know that Adelaide is one of Australia’s safest cities.
South Australia’s economy is also transforming, gaining momentum in industries including health, renewable energy, space, agriculture, and critical technologies.
We have established a range of innovation precincts, home to multinational companies. They are all located minutes from university campuses.
This proximity is more than just convenience – it enables students to gain experience and exposure to businesses and networks during their studies.
Students graduate with globally recognised qualifications and valuable industry experience - a powerful combination - enabling them to make meaningful contributions in their home country.
In South Australia, we are proud of the access to industries and educational experience we offer, as well as the support provided to students who study in Adelaide.
This extends beyond the classroom to support provided by StudyAdelaide, which hosts over 100 events for international students in Adelaide each year.
As patron of StudyAdelaide, I observe firsthand the genuine commitment of the South Australian government and community to support Cambodian students during their time in Adelaide.
I also take part, hosting events from students at Government House and engaging with students out in the community.
I take immense pride in hearing from international alumni about how their lives and careers have developed since their time in Adelaide.
To our award winners,
Congratulations on your hard work and dedication.
You have embarked on a lifelong journey in developing important skills that will have a positive impact on your future.
I hope to welcome you to Adelaide for your tertiary studies in the coming years.
