Volunteer Recognition Event at Adelaide International Semi Final

I am pleased to join you here on centre court at the Drive ahead of today’s Adelaide International semi-finals, to recognise the exceptional contribution of volunteers who make this event possible.

As Patron of Tennis SA, it’s been my pleasure to attend the tournament, with my husband Rod, several times since it began in 2020.

I continue to be impressed by the energy, skill and atmosphere that defines this tournament.

I also have fond memories of watching tennis at Memorial Drive as a young person.

I recall being captivated by the brilliant baseline play of Bjorn Borg in 1974, feeling a sense of pride that such star power was putting Adelaide and our tennis facilities on the international map.

I am pleased that the Adelaide International gives South Australians the opportunity to see world-class players in action right here at The Drive, and that it continues to showcase our state as a premier tennis destination.

As I travel the State, Rod and I are always inspired by the volunteers we meet.

It seems to be part of our DNA in South Australia, and for that our State is so much richer.

And so to all the Adelaide International volunteers here today - thank you for your generous support of this tournament.

The tournament relies on volunteers across a remarkable range of roles – from accreditation and player services to court services, activations, patron services, transport, and of course our enthusiastic ball kids.

Each role draws on different skills and experience, whether that's customer service, event management, administration, or simply a passion for tennis and a willingness to help others enjoy this sport.

I know that South Australia’s major events simply cannot function without volunteers.

The scale and complexity of these events require hundreds of people to fill roles that paid staff alone cannot cover.

Without volunteer support, many tournaments would be financially unviable.

And volunteers are often the face of sporting events, serving as the first point of contact for spectators and a friendly and welcoming presence for players.

Their enthusiasm, local knowledge, and genuine passion for the sport create a welcoming atmosphere that enhances the overall experience for fans, players, and officials alike.

I thank Adelaide International volunteers for forging important links between the tournament and the local community, helping to create lasting positive memories and building community spirit.

Today we recognise several long-term volunteers of the Adelaide International.

Together, you’ve devoted more than 50 years of your time and energy to the tournament, and for this Rod and I thank you sincerely.

I thank Tennis SA and the event organisers for running the Adelaide International, which is now in its seventh year and continues to go from strength to strength.

I note that three women's champions have gone on to win the Australian Open, which speaks to the calibre of players in this tournament, and the quality of match play we can all enjoy.

To all 260 volunteers of the Adelaide International – may your dedication continue to be a hallmark of this tournament, and may the Adelaide International continue to thrive through your exceptional service.
