Opening of the Royal Australian Yacht Squadron 2022/23 season

It’s Rod’s and my great pleasure to join you for the opening of the new sailing season, in the 153rd year of the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron.

I look forward to declaring the sailing season open a little later in proceedings.

Spring is traditionally the time when yacht clubs emerge from their ‘winter slumber’, and it’s great to see so many people here on this beautiful sunny day.

Last year, when I opened the 2021-22 sailing season, I was only a few weeks into my term as Governor.

Since then I’ve visited several yacht clubs and spent time in their communities.

I have been struck by the joy, excitement, challenge and satisfaction that people describe when recounting their sailing experiences.

There is a very strong sense of community and inclusion in the clubs, as well as an increasing focus on enabling South Australians of all backgrounds to get involved in sailing, strengthening their memberships in the process.

In particular I note and applaud efforts, here at the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron, to broaden opportunities for women, young adults, people with disability, and people for whom sailing has traditionally been regarded as out of reach.

I’m very pleased to hear you’ve continued to have excellent take-up in the Women on Water and the SheSails programs.

I note the recent creation of the Saltwater Veterans program, supporting the physical and mental health of veterans and first responders.

I also note your commitment to providing low-cost opportunities for people to experience sailing, such as the Come and Try Sailing Day.

The Squadron’s leadership and staff have done an exceptional job in 2022 and I thank them for their contributions.

In particular I mention Kaz Eaton, immediate past Commodore, for her outstanding efforts in the role, and I wish her all the best on and off the water.

I also thank the Chair and Directors of RSAYS Ltd for their management and ongoing works of great benefit to the club, such as the marina refurbishment.

I thank all of your members and volunteers who contribute so much to the club, whether on the water, or through committee work or the demanding cycle of maintenance, repair and refurbishment.

I wish everyone an enjoyable, challenging and memorable sailing season!
